As the climate crisis worsens, the potential for vulnerable New Yorkers to adapt to climate-induced disasters will become increasingly difficult. NYC religious communities are on the front lines of the climate emergency, often the primary contact for advice and services. In 2022, NYDIS launched a “Climate Resilience Program” for NYC clergy and religious lay leaders serving dis-invested communities. Drawing from existing NYDIS trainings, networks, and city-wide resources, the program will offer low-cost/no-cost climate resilience resources, networking events, trainings, and vulnerability analyses to help NYC clergy and lay leaders make effective plans, harden facilities, and answer tangible questions for climate vulnerable stakeholders.
Interfaith Action for Climate Disaster Justice
As climate driven disasters are increasing in frequency and strength, the burden of this crisis is disproportionately felt by under-resourced communities. More than ever, local communities of faith have a vital leadership role to play in helping our most climate vulnerable neighbors withstand extreme weather disasters. Helping our congregations and communities prepare for and mitigate against climate disasters, enhances social resilience and reduces disparities. Working together across cultures and faith traditions, we can build community disaster resilience, nurture justice, and tackle the urgent challenges of our climate emergency. See the video here to learn our community involvement in climate justice.
