About Us
NYDIS was founded in response to the urgent need for coordinated recovery efforts among New York City’s diverse religious communities following the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the United States.
Today, NYDIS is a 501c3, faith-based federation of 60+ religious judicatories, human service providers, and charities who work together to advance disaster readiness, response, and recovery in New York City and in communities with direct city ties as well as supporting New Yorkers who face challenges that threatened human stability and well-being – food, shelter, clothing and mental illness.
In partnership, NYDIS inspires, connects, and equips faith communities to serve our neighbors in times of crisis and suffering, by building pathways to recovery, resilience and social justice.
OUR MISSION
NYDIS inspires, connects, and equips faith communities to serve our neighbors in times of crisis and suffering, by building pathways to recovery, resilience and social justice.
OUR VISION
A world where all people can mitigate or recover from crisis and thrive—with justice, dignity, and the unwavering certainty that they are valued and cared for unconditionally.
OUR HISTORY
Following the September 11 Terrorist-Attacks, New York City faith-based agencies established programs to assist in rescue, relief, and recovery efforts. Thousands of religious leaders and people of faith volunteered to help those impacted by the attacks and the recovery worker community. This collective response was effective, but it lacked both the capacity to coordinate recovery services and the resources to prepare for future disasters. NYDIS was incorporated in 2003 to meet these needs. It has proven to be an innovative model for an interfaith long-term recovery organization. NYDIS evolved beyond the limits of a typical recovery agency to address all phases of the disaster life cycle with mitigation education, preparedness training, planning, recovery, and advocacy programs.
